01'The Braid Up': Exactly How to Create These Sick Stitch Pigtail Braids

Instead of doing the same old stitch braids that you'd normally do, this week on The Braid Up, we're asking you to mix it up a little. Don't worry—you still get to keep your stitch braids, we're not taking them away completely. But we are going to level it up for you, turning your all-down stitch braids into two pigtails—a look that's cool, fun, and, best of all, one that you haven't already seen them all over your feed. Our hair braiding guru, Stasha Harris, is giving you all the tips and tricks so you can recreate this fire look—and be the first one in your friend group to rock it.

If you're down to bring this look to life, here's everything you need to know:

1. Give yourself a deep-conditioning treatment. Adding extra moisture to your hair before you start braiding is a MUST. When it comes to protective styles, you want to make sure your hair is properly moisturized beforehand in order to prevent any breakage. So, massage in a deep-conditioning mask to make sure your hair is hydrated and ready to go.

2. Part your hair straight down the middle, into two equal sections. On your right side, divide your hair into three equal sections. Create two diagonal parts, starting at the middle part until you reach your hairline, right above your ear. These parts should create three sections on the right side of your head. Repeat this on the left side of your head.

3. Begin to stitch braid on the right side of your head, starting in the first of the three sections. Leave the braid unfinished, and begin to stitch braid the second section. Feed in the unfinished braid into the braid in the second section, so the two braids are connected. Now, leave the second braid unfinished and move onto to the third section. Feed the second braid into the third braid, and braid it all the way through. Repeat this step on the left side of your head.

4. Add a little sparkle to your look. Make every day a bit more fun by wrapping gold or silver thread around your braids. It’s the easier way to take your look from day-to-night without a major style switch up.

Department store Liberty recently re-launched its own brand of designer dress-making patterns, to meet demands from a growing younger customer base in its famous haberdashery departments. The pieces you can make include tea dresses, denim skirts, and wide-legged trousers, ideally, of course, in one of the store’s heritage floral prints. 

‘Many retailers have sold patterns for years but with high profile boutique retailers like Liberty launching their own lines it’s now reaching different markets,’ says Turner. ‘I think it’s great that high profile brands are working to make home-sewing and creativity in general more appealing and accessible to more people, particularly younger people.’

Turner, 32, personally loves creating her own clothes, turning old linen sheets into clothing, and making garments that she’s worn to fashion events, such as a black Italian 100% wool gabardine  jumpsuit she wore to the Green Carpet Fashion Awards back in September (pictured), all of which she shares on her Instagram. ‘There’s something incredibly satisfying about wearing something that you made yourself, and you know will stay in your wardrobe for years and years to come,’ she says.
